Open Standard API’s as Infrastructure for Innovation: The case of the HL7 FHIR International Patient Summary
02.10.2018
Open standard Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) have revolutionized health and care. APIs separate the digital health experience of patients, their family, and health professionals from the technical aspects of connecting to health data sources and electronic health record systems. Supported with comprehensive tools and examples, APIs have accelerated the development of mobile health apps. The case of Apple as a disruptor in the heath consumer space, is worth noting. Through distinct APIs: Health Kit, Research Kit, Care Kit, and Health records, it provides the tools and infrastructure for third parties to innovate. The Health Records APIs based on HL7 FHIR, already allow individuals to access their electronic health records in several health systems across USA.
This masterclass will present key elements of open standard APIs in healthcare taking an enterprise and business perspective. Concrete examples will help the audience reflect on the role of APIs in the digital economy and will strengthen their understanding the potential impact of HL7 FHIR for innovation in health and care. Starting from the International Patient Summary (IPS)-on-FHIR standard specification, different use case scenarios will be explored, helping the audience develop basic knowledge of HL7 FHIR and situations where the IPS can be applied across the globe.
